What is a Hole in the Wall Camp?

Hole in the Wall Camps

Flying Horse Farms is currently a provisional member of the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps. Each camp within the association has its own founders and board but Paul Newman started it all. When the camp is built, we will become a full member of the Association.

The Hole in the Wall Camp Association began with salad dressing in 1982. Paul Newman and a friend established Newman's Own Foods, a company to market the actor's personal recipe salad dressing. From the beginning, all company proceeds were earmarked for charity. The endeavor quickly profited millions of dollars.

Newman pondered ways he could use the fortune to help children. In 1986, he decided to build a place for kids who are too sick to go to ordinary camps. He named it The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp after the ragtag bandits from his film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

In 1988, the camp opened in Ashford, Connecticut, for children with cancer and serious blood disorders.

In addition to the original camp, today there are also camps in New York, Florida, California, North Carolina, Ireland, France, Israel, U.K., Italy and Hungary. Other camps in development are located in Colorado, Kansas and Michigan.

Newman's goal has always been to give kids the chance to "kick back, relax and have lots of fun!"

The camps are always free of charge for the campers and their families.

The Camps

Each Hole in the Wall Camp is a separate entity with its own distinct and unique personality. They all share a common mission, which is to build self-esteem and restore joy to children who suffer from serious illnesses.
