Flying Horse Away
Flying Horse Away is a chance for children from Ohio to get a taste of the camp experience, even before our own facility is completed (in 2010). Children from Ohio attend week-long sessions at other Association of Hole in the Wall Camps in Connecticut, North Carolina, Florida and New York. Over the past four summers 218 children attended camp through Flying Horse Away.
For most kids, Flying Horse Away is a first-time camp experience. Many have never been on an airplane before. Certainly, they never imagined having the chance to attend camp while in the midst of fighting a serious illness.
They pack their bags, enjoy a farewell picnic with parents, fellow campers, and Flying Horse Farms staff, and fly to their adventures for a week.
The time is magic for the campers. Kids ride horses, climb towers, sing, tell stories, make friends, and just act like kids.
Each child asks to come back as campers and/or mentors. Nearly all want to be counselors when they are old enough. Parents tell us about the joy and confidence they have seen when their kids return.
The memories last a lifetime and are great medicine.
