Ashley & Brianna’s Story

Ashley Robinson

As sisters, Ashley and Brianna share many things: clothing, finger-nail polish, even friends. But the biggest thing they share is Sickle Cell Anemia, something they've both lived with their entire life.

Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetic disorder of the blood. Instead of having blood cells that are shaped like a doughnut, some of theirs are shaped like a sickle with sharp edges. The shape of the cell creates a number of complications including painful episodes that can sometimes last several days.

Brianna Robinson

Ashley and Brianna love going to camp. They've developed friendships with other kids who have struggled with the same illness and can relate to the challenges. The swimming pool at camp is kept extra warm for campers with sickle cell because the cooler water would make swimming a painful experience. And they love to swim. Instead of being keenly aware of being different, camp is a place where they can relax into normalcy and take some chances. It's a place where they gain hope.

Ashley & Brianna’s Parent Testimonial

“As a parent, I have always strived to raise happy and healthy kids; my inclination is always to protect them. Camp allowed my girls a really positive experience, and showed me what a little freedom could do to give them hope.” - Danielle Potter, Ashley and Brianna's mom.
